About Iguazu Cataratas Del Iguazu Airport (IGR)
Address: Ruta Prov. 101, Aeropuerto Internacional, Puerto Iguazu, 03370, 3370
Iguazu Cataratas Del Iguazu Airport (IGR) is located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, and 6 km (4 mi) south of Iguazu Falls, the principle attraction to the region. Airport car rentals at Iguazu from Alamo, Hertz, Sixt, National, Budget, and Thrifty are located in the arrivals area of the terminal.
The majority of visitors to Iguazu come for the falls, and the bulk of them will rent a car at the airport. Unless you’re part of a tour group, transportation to the city of Puerto Iguazu is limited to buses that run on an erratic schedule. Getting to the Parque do Iguazu is also best with a private vehicle. And besides, you’ll want to do some exploring on the Brazilian side of the border.
The town of Puerto Iguazu is fairly compact, and mapped on a grid, so you won’t have many issues getting around. There’s basically one main highway into and out of the Iguazu Falls region — Highway 12/101 on the Argentinian side, which links to Brazil National Road 469. The Brazilian city of Foz do Iguazu is two or three times as large and lively as the Puerto Iguazu, and the tri-state area’s only entry point for Paraguay and Ciudad del Este for over 300 kilometers in either direction.
Since you’re entering the region from the Argentinian side, it’s important to note that the area surrounding the town and falls is almost completely uninhabited, and you’re technically in one of the most remote areas of the country. Southbound travel of any great distance is not recommended.
Otherwise, you can expect the main roads to be in good shape, and the minor roads in a condition that’s going to cause discomfort to you and your passengers, and certain damage to your car. At any rate, rent a car with GPS, and download some maps on your mobile device, just in case.
