Tips and advice for renting a car at Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal
Australia drives on the left-hand side of the road. All Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal (SYD) car rental companies will have right-hand drive vehicles.
Sydney uses a tram system so watch out for them on the roads. If you come across one, note that the tram always has right of way.
Using mobile phones while driving is strictly prohibited, unless it’s in a mounted mobile phone holder on the dashboard. Even then you may only use it to make or receive a call. Using your phone for anything else including texting is illegal.
Foreigners can rent a car in Australia with a valid driver’s license from their own country, provided it’s displayed in English. If it’s written in another language, you will need to have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP).
Sydney has electronic tolling so it’s recommended that visitors obtain an E-toll Pass. This is usually provided by the rental car company — but do check as tolls use electronic tags and number plate recognition. Toll roads include the M2, M4, M5 and M7 to name a few. Check your route before you leave to avoid any unnecessary surprises.
