About Nigeria (NG)

Nigeria (NG) is located in West Africa with a southern coastline on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean, and bordered by Niger to the north, Cameroon to the southeast, Chad to the northeast, and Benin to the west. Situated roughly 500 kilometers north of the Equator, Nigeria has a tropical climate with variable but generally dry conditions in the north.

Its coastal lowlands give way to central highlands, mountains in the east, and high plains in the north. The sprawling metropolis of Lagos and the capital of Abuja are the primary gateways for international travelers to Nigeria, the majority of which arrive on business or reuniting with family. With the exception of a few World Heritage Sites scattered across the territory, in tandem with rampant poverty, Nigeria has very little appeal for tourists. The northern half of the country has been under prolonged travel warnings due to ethnic unrest and general lawlessness.

  Getting around

Visitors will quickly come to the conclusion that the best way of getting around is to rent a car in Nigeria.

However, road conditions are extremely variable, with highways in fair condition to absolutely impassable throughout the country. Minor roads and rural routes are typically off-limits to foreigners.

It’s said that if you can handle driving in Nigeria, you can drive anywhere in the world. However, first-time visitors will be strongly discouraged from getting behind the wheel of a car hire — for a litany of reasons, but most all, your safety. Travelers who are familiar with Nigeria will fare much better, if only for the foreknowledge of avoiding the major trouble spots. Worst of all, Nigerian traffic cops have a reputation for preying on foreign visitors, and if you’re determined to self-drive in the country, you’re strongly advised to do your homework in context to law enforcement.

The majority of business travelers will be supplied with a local driver, and it’s highly likely that your Nigerian car hire provider will not release the vehicle without repeated assurances that you know what you’re doing.

  Choosing your car

For a great deal on a cheap car rental in Nigeria, book your car hire with National, Enterprise, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, or Sixt. Choose from economy hatchbacks, fullsize 4-door sedans, estate wagons, premium and luxury vehicles, SUVs, and 7-12 seater minivans.

  Tips and advice

1

Whatever you do, it’s essential that you keep your cool at all times. Any show of anger is considered offensive and disrespectful.

2

Keep your doors locked and windows sealed at all times when driving in Nigeria.

3

Be aware of frequent checkpoints throughout the country and be prepared to deal with police officers seeking some sort of financial token.

4

You’ll be sharing the roads with every imaginable moving object and creature under the sun. Be particularly mindful of pedestrians and livestock.

5

Register with your home country’s embassy or consulate upon arrival in Nigeria.
