About Antalya Airport (AYT)
Address: Antalya Havalimani Ic Hat, Antalya Havalimani Airport Domestic Arrivals, Antalya
Antalya Airport (AYT) is located 10 km (6 mi) east of central Antalya, Turkey, a coastal tourism area on the Mediterranean Sea, sometimes called the Turkish Riviera for its collection of beach resorts and entertainment options. Antalya Airport car rentals are available from Avis, Budget, Europcar, National, Sixt, and Thrifty are located in the parking lot adjacent to the terminal.
While the Turkish public transportation is doing a good job for the permanent residents of Antalya, getting around is far more convenient and far less confusing for visitors who rent a car at Antalya Airport.
The sprawling city of Antalya is certainly well-mapped by roads of every size and shape, but few of the major attractions are concentrated in one area — least of all the beach resorts, which are the primary attraction for international visitors. If there could be an inarguable truth about driving in Antalya, it would be the necessity of GPS. While the city is framed by a ring of decent highways, the bulk of urban navigation will take place on narrow street, many of which are either unmarked or unnamed. When viewed from above, the Old Town section of Antalya looks not unlike a spider web. As you follow these routes to the outlying areas, some of them dead-end in the far reaches of the suburbs.
The beach resorts and other aquatic destinations such as Aqualand, are found to the east and west of the city center, and roughly 5-10 km in either direction. The only major attraction to the north is the Antalya Zoo. All the main highways have been converted to electronic-only toll roads, so you’ll want to get a transponder from your car hire vendor which they generally have as standard.
And there are a couple of anomalies about driving in Turkey in general that you might want to know. For instance, all traffic lights are posted to the side of the intersection and right at the line, rather than overhead in the middle, or at the opposite end of the intersection. This makes it somewhat hard to see when the light changes color unless you know where to look. Meanwhile, many intersections are controlled by roundabouts that aren’t really roundabouts. That one is hard to explain — you’ll just have to experience it for yourself.
