About Manchester Airport (MAN)

Address: Manchester Apt Car Rental Village Ringway Road, manchester Airport, Manchester, M22 5wh

  Getting around

The second busiest airport in the U.K., Manchester Airport (MAN) is located 11 miles (18 km) south of central Manchester. Most major airport car rental providers are situated in the Car Rental Village, just a few minutes from the terminals via complementary shuttle service. All the big names — Avis, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt — offer great car hire deals in a convenient one-stop location.

Like many a number of English cities, Greater Manchester is circumambulated by a ring road system — the Ring Road (M60) does a loop around central Manchester. Meanwhile, the M62 is your ticket south to Liverpool (31 miles / 50 km). While traffic congestion is a problem, it’s surprisingly easy to navigate England’s second largest city. Aside from parking, the dealing with changeable weather is likely to be the greatest challenge facing first-time visitors to the city. Manchester is a particularly wet seaside location.

Given its unofficial status as “the capital of the North”, Manchester offers a wide range of sights and attractions within its borders and elsewhere further afield. As long you brush up on local traffic regulations — and get used to driving on the left side of the road — in the rain — there’s no real reason not to rent a car during your stay. Outside of deep inner city Manchester, parking is relatively cheap and plentiful. Likewise, the roads are fairly easy to navigate.

  Choosing your car

Choosing your car is as important as booking a hotel room — maybe even more important. You can always go down to a hotel’s front desk and ask for a different room. But returning a car to (MAN) is probably a trip you don’t want to make. Take a minute to consider your plans so you don’t regret a hasty decision. The smart choice for city driving is a compact Toyota or an economy Nissan. If you’re bringing the family, a Mitsubishi estate wagon has plenty of storage and legroom. Given the wet and slippery conditions, a Ford SUV offers 4WD handling and comfort. Manchester’s rainy weather isn’t ideal for Chevrolet convertibles, but hey — it’s your life. Of course, for road trips, a standard Volkswagen sedan seats five adults with room for three suitcases. Large families and groups of travel companions will appreciate the roomy interior of a Ford 7-9 seater minivan.
